ASVAB:  On Thursday, October 6, 2016, Portville Central School sophomores will be given the opportunity to take part in a career exploration program.  They will take the ASVAB aptitude tests which can then be used in determining areas of interest in career fields. Any other junior or senior students interested in the test may sign up in the Counseling Center.

PSAT:  Your junior is eligible to take the PSAT exam on October 19, 2016, in the high school cafeteria at 7:45 AM.  Students need to sign up by October 16, 2016, in the High School Counseling Center.  The fee for the test is $15.00 and will need to be paid when you register.  Sign-ups are required.

COLLEGE INFORMATION: 
 
BIG NEWS!  Transfer Agreements have been announced.  JCC graduates can more easily transfer into Alfred State's technology management program!  This agreement guarantees junior standing for JCC students who graduate with an associate or associate in applied science degree and who have achieved at least a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.  JCC students are also guaranteed the opportunity to complete the bachelor's degree in four semesters if they take specified courses as part of their associate's degree.  A transfer agreement has also been announced for JCC students to attend SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF).  This agreement guarantees acceptance of JCC students who earn a minimum overall GPA appropriate for their intended program of study.  Students can transfer with sophomore standing to their choice from among 3 associate's degree programs offered at SUNY-ESF's New York State Ranger School at Wanakena, or with junior standing to their choice from among 21 bachelor's degree programs offered at SUNY-ESF's Syracuse campus.  SUNY-ESF offers bachelor's degree programs in aquatic and fisheries science, bioprocess engineering, biotechnology, chemistry, conservation biology, construction management, environmental biology, environmental education and interpretation, environmental health, environmental resources engineering, environmental science, environmental studies, forest ecosystem science, forest health, forest resources management, landscape architecture, natural resources management, paper engineering, paper science, sustainable energy management and wildlife science.  Students may also transfer to The Ranger School campus to complete the second year of the Associate in Applied Science degree in environmental and natural resources conservation, forest technology or land surveying technology.
 
On October 17, 2016, your 8th grader with be attending Future Focus.  This trip to BOCES gives students a first glance at one of their options for 11th and 12th grades.  The trip will be all day so please be sure to pack your lunch. 

Your sophomore will be attending BOCES on November 30, 2016, for a tour and chance to explore classes at the facility with a hands-on approach.

Portville Central School freshmen have been invited to the JCC Careers Horizons 2016.  Students will have a chance to meet with specialists from various occupations, ask questions and gain insight into multiple career interest and opportunities.  The career exploration will be split into three required half hour workshops/activities:  Workshop 1 – SKILLS PAY THE BILLS; Workshop 2 – THE POWER OF WORDS; and Activity 3 – Career representatives in the college fair format--including a scavenger hunt with prizes. The event will be held December 2, 2016, at the JCC Campus in Olean.  We will leave the school at 8:30 AM and return at 11:00 AM.

The Western New York Consortium of Higher Education will be visiting Portville Central School on Friday, September 23, 2016, between 11:00 AM and 11:45 AM. 

Penn York College Night which will take place on March 14, 2017, in the Reilly Center at St. Bonaventure University.  This is a great opportunity for sophomores and juniors to speak with a number of colleges and universities.  Event will run from 6-8:00 PM.

The National College Fair trip is on Thursday, March 16, 2017.   Students will be going to The Buffalo Niagara Convention Center for an all-day event.  Students will depart from Portville at 8:00 AM and will return to Portville at approximately 2:20 PM.
